There are two ways to be paid by Social Security, essentially. There is Social Security Disability Insurance, which is a benefit paid from taxes paid from a pay check when a person has been working substantially over the course of years. Then those benefits are paid from money paid in from taxes. There is also benefits for people who have not worked enough, or who have been paid in cash, or who are children. Those are known as benefits paid by Supplemental Security Income. That is a fund of money maintained by Social Security that is paid as a benefit to people who otherwise would not be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.
