Many people are applying for Social Security Disability, and because of the large number of people waiting there is a backlog at the Social Security office. Claimants have to be processed through the local office. They have had to file an initial application and been denied, and they have to file a reconsideration and get denied before they can file for a hearing before a judge. All claimants must go through all of these steps in order. By the time a request for hearing is filed, there are thousands of people who have already filed ahead of them at the hearing office (where they will have their hearing), and they have already got people behind them as they file their application. Through sheer numbers of people who are waiting for disability, it makes the wait a long one.
