One big difference between the Social Security Disability and the Veteran’s compensation benefits is that you don’t have to be totally disabled from work to qualify for VA benefits. VA benefits are not an all or nothing thing like Social Security is. So, VA benefits are given on a rating system from 0 percent to 100 percent, depending on how severe their problem is. So a lot of my clients who are veterans are actually still at work, which is good news because they have income coming in. In terms of Social Security, if you’re not working you have no money coming in. You’ve got a lot of other issues that are going to pop up.  You’re going to have to deal with not being able to pay your rent, maybe not getting food, maybe not having health care because you lost your insurance when you lost your job. We help clients navigate that a lot. We help them deal with getting food stamps, with getting Medicaid, with where to go to get help with rent, public assistance for rent, which is for a lot of times for people a brand new thing. They’ve never had to apply for that stuff before. They’ve always worked and been able to provide for themselves. So, we do help people get through that process.
