The Appeals Council status sheet shows attorneys the status of the cases that they have pending at the Appeals Council. It is available to all attorneys with access to Social Security’s online features for representatives.
There is not a lot of information on the status sheet, but we can tell if the case is waiting to be assigned to someone for review or if it has already been assigned.
The sheet does not let us know how much longer we will be waiting for a decision, which is the information our clients really want to know. Some cases take less than three months and some take more than a year. The Appeals Council is allowed to take as much time as it wants to make decisions in cases.
